Have you ever noticed that when God created Adam, He did something Scripture does not say He did with any other living creature?
God formed Adam from the dust of the ground and then “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life” (Genesis 2:7).
The Hebrew phrase used here is nishmat chayyim—”the breath of life.” It is a beautiful picture of God’s personal involvement in the creation of man.
Animals were certainly alive and are described as having the “breath of life” (Genesis 6:17; 7:15). Yet Scripture never describes God personally breathing into the animals, birds, fish, or other creatures as He did Adam. In Genesis 6:17 and 7:15, a different Hebrew phrase is used, ruach chayyim, meaning “the breath” or “spirit of life.”
Many theologians see this distinction as emphasizing humanity’s unique relationship with God. Human beings are not merely living creatures. We are created in God’s image (Genesis 1:26-27). The divine breath highlights that special status.
Perhaps this helps answer the psalmist’s question:
“What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?” (Psalm 8:4)
Of all God’s creation, humanity alone is described as being made in His image and personally receiving the breath of life. From the moment God breathed into Adam’s nostrils, mankind was created for fellowship with Him.
The God who breathed physical life into Adam is the same God who gives spiritual life through Jesus Christ. What began with God’s breath in Genesis points us to the One who said, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).
