When Israel entered the Promised Land, the Lord warned them not to imitate the nations He was driving out before them. The Canaanites were not being judged because Israel was righteous. God made that very clear. Their judgment came because of their wickedness, idolatry, immorality, and rebellion against Him.
The Lord said, “Do not defile yourselves with any of these things; for by all these the nations are defiled, which I am casting out before you” (Leviticus 18:24 NKJV). But then came the warning to Israel: “Lest the land vomit you out also when you defile it, as it vomited out the nations that were before you” (Leviticus 18:28 NKJV).
In other words, Israel was not exempt from the holiness of God. If they embraced the sins of the nations, they would face the judgment of the nations. And eventually, they did. They turned to idols, ignored the prophets, practiced injustice, and forgot the Lord who had redeemed them. The northern kingdom fell to Assyria. Judah was carried away into Babylon.
This was not favoritism.

God does not have one standard for Canaan and another for Israel. He does not excuse sin because of a nation’s name, a person’s heritage, or a religious label. He is patient. He is merciful. He is slow to anger. But He is also holy, righteous, and just.
And this is why we need Christ.
If God’s holiness does not bend, then our hope cannot rest in our goodness. It cannot rest in our efforts, our heritage, our church attendance, or our ability to do better next time. Our hope must rest in Jesus.
He bore the judgment we deserved. He carried the sin we could not remove. He made peace through the blood of His cross.
That is the mercy of God. Not that He overlooks sin, but that He provided a Savior.

God shows no partiality. Our only hope before a holy God is Jesus Christ.
